Before You Begin

Strumming can be a difficult concept to master. It can come quickly for some, and be a challenge for others. The key is to stick with it until you get it down. Be sure to go through the Self-Quiz and the Tips & Tricks sections after learning. Don't forget to download your student guide below.

Self-Quiz

1.  Can I keep in time with the pattern?

2.  Am I strumming correctly with my pick?

3.  Do I have a hard time going both up's and down's?

4.  Is my speed consistent without variation over time? 

Tips & Tricks

1.  Try using a metronome when practicing different patterns.

2.  Try and play the same pattern at slow and fast speeds.

3.  Vocalize what you want your hand to do. Say the down's and up's aloud as you play.

Tips & Tricks

1.  Try playing along with songs that are in the 6/8 time signature.

2.  Prepare yourself for each upcoming chord change.

3. Your strumming hand should eventually feel like its on auto pilot.
